You must earn a 90% or higher on each chapter test to get credit. Writing Assignments This semester, you will be doing various based on personal experiences. Your writing assignments must always be written in your own words. I want to know your thoughts and opinions. I also want to see how well you apply your grammar skills to your work. Therefore, your writing assignments will be scored on both content and grammar. Tardy and Attendance Policy Attendance is mandatory! Since a grade is earned in each class session, you will lower you grade if you miss a class, come in late, or leave early. If you know that you are going to be absent or late, please be responsible and call me or send me an e-mail message. Always make sure to sign the attendance sheet. You will be considered absent if your name is not on the sheet. Make-Up Assignments If you are absent, you are responsible for any missed assignments on the day you return to class. You will also be expected to take any tests on the day you return. Therefore, you may want to write down the names and phone numbers of at least two students in the class so that you can call them to find out what you need to do. Also, if you miss a test, you will only be allowed to make it up if you have an excused absence such as a government obligation, an extreme illness, death in the immediate family, or the observance of a holy day. You must notify the professor before you miss the class in order to receive an excused absence, and you must bring official documentation such as a doctor’s note on the day you return to class. A make up for the final exam will only be given in an extreme emergency with official documentation. Classmates to call in case you are absent: Name: _________________________ Phone # ______________________ Name: _________________________ Phone # ______________________ Late Assignments LATE ASSIGNMENTS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED FOR A GRADE! Make sure that you get me all assignments on the day that they are due, even if you have to fax them or e-mail them to me. Homework Homework assignments will be assigned as needed. All homework assignments are due at the beginning of class so don’t be late. If you are more than ten minutes late, your assignment will not be accepted. NO EXCEPTIONS!! Classwork In order to receive a grade for work done in class, you must be present for the entire class session. If you leave early or come in late, you will not receive a grade for that day’s work. Participation You earn a participation grade for each class session. Therefore, you will lower your participation grade if you are absent, show up late, leave early, speak a language other than English in class, and/or do not actively participate in class. Every student begins with 5 automatic participation points, but you can lose participation points in the following manner. *You are allowed to be absent once without penalty. After that, you will lose two points for every absence. *You are allowed to be a few minutes late or leave a few minutes early up to two times without penalty. After that, every time you are late or leave early, you will lose a participation point. *If you do not actively participate or if you speak a language other than English in class, you will be warned once. After that, you will lose a participation point for each infraction. Academic Honesty: Any student found to have committed the following misconduct, either on or off campus, is subject to the disciplinary sanctions outline in Student Code of Conduct Procedures: 1. Dishonesty, including but not limited to the following: a. Cheating, plagiarism, or other forms of academic dishonesty. The term “cheating,” includes but is not limited to: § copying homework assignments from other student § working together with another individual on a take-home test or homework when specifically prohibited from doing so by the instructor § looking at text, notes, or another person’s paper during an examination when not permitted to do so. § giving of work or information to another student to be copied and / or used as his or her own. This includes but is not limited to: o giving someone answers to exam questions either when the exam is being given or after having taken an exam o informing another student of specific questions that appear or have appeared on an exam in the same academic term o giving or selling a term paper, report, project, or other restricted written materials to another student. The term “plagiarism,” includes, but is not limited to: § an attempt of an individual to claim the work of another as the product of his or her own thoughts, regardless of whether that work has been published. § quoting improperly or paraphrasing text or other written materials without proper citation on an exam, term paper, homework, or other written material submitted to an instructor as one’s own work. § handing in a paper to an instructor that was purchased from a term paper service or downloaded from the Internet and presenting another person’s academic work as one’s own. 2. Students are expected to do their own work at all times. Students who cheat on an assignment or test will fail that assignment or test. If you plagiarize on an assignment, you will receive a zero on that assignment. In addition, you may fail the class and be suspended or expelled from the college (see Student Handbook). Therefore, always do your own work. Respect One of the most important elements in any classroom is respect. As your instructor, I will work very hard to be respectful of you at all times. Therefore, I expect you to do the same. Here are some practices that will help us to maintain a respectful learning environment. 1. Speak English at all times. Since you are all here to learn English and English is the common language among us all, please refrain from speaking your native language while in class. You will lower your participation grade if you speak a language other than English in class. 2. Turn off all cell phones and beepers. It is very hard to concentrate when there are cell phones ringing and conversations going on, so please do not use your cell phone in class. 3. Raise your hand to speak in class. Even though it may seem elementary, it is important for everyone to have a chance to speak and be heard. Therefore, we must all take turns speaking, and raising our hands allows us to do that. 4. Come to class on time. One of the most disruptive behaviors in a class is constant tardiness. Tardiness disrupts the instructor and the students, so please come to class on time regularly. 5. Come to class ready and eager to learn. Avoid the following: Do not talk out of turn or carry on private conversations during class. If you are tired, sleep at home but not in my class. ***YOU WILL BE ASKED TO LEAVE IF YOU BEHAVE IN ANY MANNER THAT DISRUPTS THE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT OR DISRESPECTS ANYONE IN THE CLASS! FINAL NOTE: I look forward to working with you this semester. I believe that with hard work and perseverance each person in this class has the chance to be successful. It is also very important that you tell me when you need extra help or clarification, so please feel free to ask questions when a concept is unclear and come to my office hours for additional help when necessary. Remember, I am here to help you succeed! Therefore, let’s work together and have a great semester. NOTE: The instructor reserves the right to change this syllabus at any time and in any way in order to accommodate the needs of the class.
