Student Success Tips
Visit UNLV's Ron Cronovich's "Effective Study Methods for Economics Students," at http://www.scsv.nevada.edu/~roncron/studytips.html.
Try the following approach for each chapter:
(The steps in italics require the Student Support Package)
- If available, download the appropriate Powerpoint slides and lecture audios.
- Read the Chapter Summary (e.g.,page 10) FIRST. It tells you what the chapter is about.
- Read the chapter SLOWLY and THOROUGHLY as you go. Stop at every figure, chart, table, and graph, and literally work your way through it. This will save you LOTS of time and confusion later.
- Take NOTES as you read. Writing it down is MUCH more effective than highlighting.
- Use the Study Guide to check your knowledge. If you find yourself missing many questions, reread the section, then use the Interactive Tutorial CD-ROM to clarify the parts you don't understand.
- If you're still having trouble with the material, try "Smartthinking", a FREE online tutoring service with a LIVE human. Just go to the BCC Home Page, log in to myBCC, look to the lower left of your myBCC page, and select the "Smartthinking" link.
- For Quiz/Test Preparation, use the resources at the Test Preparation and Review resources at the Student Web Site. Refer back to the textbook, Study Guide, and Tutorial CD as needed.
- And of course, don't forget your professor!!! I am just a phone call or e-mail away. See Faculty Contact information in your Syllabus.
You may find it impossible to use ALL of the available resources, so it's important that you look at each one and select those which accommodate YOUR learning style the most. Also, don't use Chapter 1 as a guide, since it is so easy. Try them all for the first THREE chapters; by then, you'll have a pretty good feel for what works best.
