TEXT: Environmental Science Working With the Earth 8th Edition, by Miller
DESCRIPTION: ENV 1009 - This course is designed to give students an understanding of the physical environment, its relationship with the biosphere, and man's impact upon natural systems. There are no co- or prerequisites.
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this course is to provide non-science majors with an overview of basic concepts of environmental science. It is intended to contribute to a well-rounded general education and to provide a foundation for making educated decisions as citizens in matters, which relate to the environment. Finally, it is hoped that a greater knowledge of the living world will lead to a greater appreciation of it.
ATTENDANCE: You are expected to attend each lecture and BE ON TIME. Regular ATTENDANCE IS A MUST if you wish to do well. If you miss a class, it will be your responsibility to acquire any missed material and/or announcements from the instructor or a fellow student. In order for your absence to be excused, you must telephone or e-mail the Professor before class or, in the most extenuating circumstances, within 24 hours after class. Students are permitted two (2) absences per semester. Two point five percent (2.5%), of the student's overall grade, will be deducted per absence, after the allotted 2. After five (5) absences, the student could be automatically withdrawn from this course.
WITHDRAWAL: It is the responsibility of the student to withdraw from a course by due date. If any student feels that he or she is unable to complete this course, he/she must go to the Registrar and formerly withdraw. If you withdraw, you will receive a "W;" If you audit you still need to attend all classes and take all tests. Don't even think about asking to be withdrawn or changed to an audit student after due date unless there is a valid, documented medical reason. Once again, I can automatically withdraw any student who has missed five (5) classes. All students should refer to the BCC General Catalog for the official withdrawal statement. It is the intent of this instructor to uphold this policy and assign a grade of "F" to any student who fails to officially withdraw. Students can take the same course a maximum of 3 times. Withdrawals count as an attempt. As with baseball, after 3 attempts you must pay the full "out of state" tuition amount for the course (approximately $135.00 per credit).
Conflict Resolution: Always come to me first with any questions, problems or misunderstandings. What you interpret as a problem may be easily fixed by communicating your viewpoint or confusion to your instructor. You may also wish to see a counselor, and discuss with him/her your concerns. Do not wait to discuss something that may be bothering you. The longer you wait, the more complicated a situation tends to become. By keeping an open line of communication between us, we are certain to resolve any misunderstandings or conflicts.
Emergency Phones:
BCC Security: 761-7419
Faculty Office: 761-7558
FAU Security: 760-5611

Evacuation Routes: Use the stairways located at either end of the hallway. NEVER TAKE THE ELEVATOR. See diagram at the entrance of the classroom.
Academic Honesty: Violation of the BCC rules and regulations will result in an immediate dismissal from class and a recorded grade for the course of "F". In accordance with the BCC Student Handbook, any student in violation of the aforementioned rules and regulations may be recommended for disciplinary action to the Dean of Student Affairs. In particular, cheating, of any type, will not be tolerated. Any party involved in such unethical and illegal activity will be given an immediate "F" for this course and face prompt disciplinary action.
GRADING: Two (2) tests and a Comprehensive Final will be given during the term. MAKE UP TESTS WILL NOT BE GIVEN WITHOUT DOCUMENTATION OF SERIOUS ILLNESS, DEATH IN THE IMMEDIATE FAMILY, OR STATUTORY GOVERNMENTAL RESPONSIBILITIES. STUDENTS MUST NOTIFY THE INSTRUCTOR IN ADVANCE OF AN ABSENCE DUE TO THE OBSERVANCE OF A RELIGIOUS HOLIDAY IN HIS/HER OWN FAITH.
All points will be totaled and the final course grade determined using the following scale:
90 - 100 % = A
80 - 89 % = B
70 - 79 % = C
60 - 69 % = D
Below 60 = F
As with all science disciplines, becoming knowledgeable in Environmental
Science requires hard work and commitment, but learning about the world we
live in and how we, as individuals, can enjoy and improve upon our planet
is a challenge that offers endless rewards.
