COURSE OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will have learned how to plan, organize and execute a coherent essay (minimum 500 wds.) in various rhetorical modes, using proper grammar (pronouns, tense, agreement, etc.) and development. In addition, the student will have learned how to write a research paper using proper methods of quotation and documentation (MLA style). The Honors research paper will be 2,500 words.
PLAGIARISM: It has become
necessary (unfortunately) to take a very hard line attitude toward intentional
plagiarism (defined as turning in a paper not your own either from the internet
or another source, or using undocumented sources in building your own papers). All work must be the work of the student, and
when material is borrowed in whatever form, it must be documented as
borrowed. Any student who knowingly
turns in a paper that is taken from somewhere other than his/her own brain and
NOT documented as such, will automatically fail the entire course and be brought
up on disciplinary charges with the administration (which usually leads to
administrative withdrawal from BCC.
PLEASE DO NOT RUN THE RISK OF BEING ONE OF THOSE STUDENTS!!!!

PAPER FORMAT:
All essays are to be turned in with a cover sheet (regular paper with your name, Class, date, and assignment written in the upper right hand corner--no folders or covers, please). Whether handwritten or typed, they must be double spaced (skip every other line if handwritten), one side of the page only, numbered pages, and stapled in the upper left hand corner. Use only blue or black ink; never pencil The research paper must be typed, put in a paper pocket folder with copies of ALL research material. An automatic “F” will be given if paper is turned in without copies of source materials. It is essential to your grade to keep all your papers in a separate pocket folder labeled English. Never throw anything away until after grades are in for the semester. Thank you.
An an Honors Class, a “B” or better is required to pass with Honors Credit. In the event of receiving a “C,” you will pass the class, but not receive Honors credit for it.
* Syllabus is approximate and subject to change.
If you have any problems or questions about assignments, please feel free to call me either at my office or at home.
Honors Research and
Class Project:
You will be required to do a class project. These projects vary from class to class and will be discussed in the classroom when appropriate.
See pg.4 for policies.
POLICIES
While I realize that life does not always
comply with our schedules and wishes, it is necessary to have some rules which
must be adhered to. I do have an
attendance policy, and I do take a daily roll.
NO STUDENT CAN EXPECT TO PASS THIS COURSE WITH MORE THAN 5 ABSENCES FOR
ANY REASON. Class participation is a
portion of the grade, and since you can't participate if you are not here, the
grade is largely based on attendance. If
you wish to withdraw before the official drop date ends, you may do so, but it
is your responsibility to fill out the proper forms in the Registrar's office.
Important Notice
Faculty are now bound to report student
non-attendance. If you stop attending class prior to the
withdrawal date, you will be administratively withdrawn from class and receive
a W or, if it is your third attempt, an F.
If you stop
attending class after the withdrawal date, you will receive a WF
that will then be computed as an F in your GPA. To avoid
this situation, you should remain an active learner in this class and always
communicate extenuating circumstances to me. Ongoing communication with
the instructor is critical to your course success.
RESEARCH PAPERS: A formal research paper is required in this
class. Research papers are to be the
student's own work. If any student is
caught using a paper other than his/her own, s/he will automatically fail the
course. Research papers are to be
2,500 words in length, typed, double spaced, and Photocopies (or printouts) of all source material used must be included
with the paper. Papers are to be
handed in in a paper pocket folder, stapled, include a cover sheet, and all
photocopies or printouts of source material highlighted in the areas of
inclusion in paper.
GRADING: All late
papers will be accorded one full grade point penalty. No late papers will be accepted on the days
of in-class essays (unless previously arranged for special reasons) and no
papers more than 2 classes late will be accepted at all (In other words, papers must be made up
within one week of the missed date.) Two
or more missing papers can cause automatic failure of the course.
As this is an Honors Class, a “B” or better must be obtained in order
to receive Honors Credit, though a “C” will count as a passing grade.
