COURSE OBJECTIVES

This course is designed to introduce the student to contemporary poetry through readings, guest speakers, and discussion.  Each week we will be exploring and discussing poetry with an emphasis on the emotional impact poetry has on our lives.  Successful completion of this course will result in the student’s ability to recognize the multilayered facets that contemporary poetry encompasses, its various techniques, and styles of delivery.   Poems to be read will be assigned each class, as well as papers due.  Since this class satisfies the 3,000 word writing requirement, there will be several papers of varying lengths and a class presentation due from each student.

PLAGIARISM:  It has become necessary (unfortunately) to take a very hard line attitude toward intentional plagiarism (defined as turning in a paper not your own either from the internet or another source).  All work must be the work of the student, and when material is borrowed in whatever form, it must be documented as borrowed.  Any student who knowingly turns in a paper that is taken from somewhere other than his/her own brain and NOT documented as such, will automatically fail the entire course and be brought up on disciplinary charges with the administration (which usually leads to administrative withdrawal from  BCC.  PLEASE DO NOT RUN THE RISK OF BEING ONE OF THOSE STUDENTS!!!!

Students are expected to attend class regularly and to be on time.  Papers must be turned in as specified.  Late papers are accorded one grade point penalty, and may not be over one week late. ABSOLUTELY NO LATE PAPERS WILL BE ACCEPTED THE LAST FULL WEEK OF CLASS. FIVE UNEXCUSED ABSENCES MAY CAUSE FAILURE OF THE COURSE.  If you stop attending class prior to the withdrawal date, you will be administratively withdrawn from class and receive a W or, if it is your third attempt, an F

If you stop attending class after the withdrawal date, you will receive a WF that will then be computed as an F in your GPA.  To avoid this situation, you should remain an active learner in this class and always communicate extenuating circumstances to me.  Ongoing communication with the instructor is critical to your course success.

If you have any questions about assignments or missing a class, please feel free to call me at either my office or at home.

The class Presentation is an in depth paper on a contemporary poet or poetic movement, NOT in the textbook who is still living and has published at least one book.  The paper will be approx. 500 words (not including sample poems), and then orally presented to the class.
