Course Requirements
There are a number of reading assignments that must be completed, and related questions to be answered and posted to the Discussion Board. Discussions are an integral part of this course and are graded as participation. (See table below
- In addition to the reading and discussion assignments throughout the course, there are a variety of formal writing assignments, including a formal research paper. An authorship statement must be attached to all essays as your cover page, certifying that the essay is your own work. Plagiarism will be dealt with in a manner consistent with the school's policies (see student handbook), and I reserve the option of failing students who intentionally plagiarize. Opportunities for extra credit will be offered in the form of additional essays or attendance at various cultural events (to be announced as they occur) with a small reaction page for each.
I do have a participation policy, and there is a grade given for participation. This refers to the Bulletin Board Discussion and is fully outlined below. If I do not see any activity from you for more than a week, and you have not contacted me, it is my perogative to drop you from the course and deny future access. Please contact me if you are going to be away or should you wish to drop. Formal procedures must followed when dropping the course on your own:
If you wish to withdraw before the official drop date ends, you may do so, but it is your responsibility to fill out the proper forms in the Registrar's office. ANY STUDENT FAILING TO FILL OUT THE PROPER FORMS IS SUBJECT TO A GRADE OF "F." IF YOU MUST DROP AFTER THE OFFICIAL DROP DATE, AND YOU COME AND TALK TO ME ABOUT IT, I WILL CONSIDER GIVING A "W;" IF YOU DO NOT INFORM ME, IT IS MY PEROGATIVE TO ASSIGN A GRADE OF "F."
Disabilities Statement: Any student who has special needs as defined by the Americans with Disabilities Act should notify the instructor so that reasonable accomodations can be made.
GRADING: All late papers will be accorded one full grade point penalty, and no papers more than 1week late will be accepted at all (In other words, papers must be made up within one week of the missed date.) Two or more missing papers can cause automatic failure of the course.
Grading Scale:
A = 4 (3.60-4.00) Essays 50% B = 3 (2.75-3.59) Research Paper 25% C = 2 (1.75-2.74) D = 1 (0.75-1.74) Discussions 25% F =.5 (below .75) Extra Credit .1STATEMENT on PLAGIARISM:
Unfortunately,this has become a necessity: Any student who knowingly plagiarizes, and turns in a paper as his/her own that is copied from somewhere else, will automatically FAIL the course and proper disciplinaray action will be taken with the administration. There will be no second chances.
Discussion Board Postings
All students are expected to participate in the bulletin board discussions and to do so in a respectful manner. That means that no foul language should be used, you must respect one another’s opinions, and your communications must be in grammatically correct English. None of the “net shorthands” please! This will constitute 15% of your grade and will be determined as follows:
