Faculty Introduction
Welcome to Pediatrics. My 26 years
of nursing have been filled with many blessings, the opportunity to be
included in the lives of so many children and families amongst the greatest.
I love nursing and I love teaching. I am very happy to include you in the
sharing of my pediatric nursing world for the next 8 weeks. Please remember,
as is true with any life experience, you will get out of this course what
you put into it! Please do the children and their families a favor and
put your whole being into the next 8 weeks.

Prerequisites

Required prerequisites include
NUR 1220 & NUR 1220L
Required co requisite(s) include
NUR 1310L or NUR 1731L.
Course Description
This course is designed to provide
an in-depth understanding of common elements related to (nursing process,
physical assessment, fluid & electrolyte balance, and intravenous parental
therapy) and to provide the nursing student with the knowledge and skills
related to the care of the well and the ill child.

Learning Outcomes
Upon completion
of this course the student will be able to accomplish the following:
1.
Distinguish culturally sensitive effective communication strategies when
interacting with the pediatric patient of various ages, their families,
and other members of the health care team.
2.
Modify the nursing process as a systemic critical thinking method to provide
safe and effective care to the pediatric patients and their families in
a variety of settings.
3.
Determine the theoretical contributions made by the developmental theorists
as they apply to growth and development from birth through adolescence
utilizing a holistic approach.
4.
Distinguish appropriate assessment data needed to provide caring interventions
that promote teaching and learning to assist patients in meeting their
needs at each stage of childhood, across the wellness-illnesss continuum.
5.
Determine the availability of existing programs needed to manage the care
of the pediatric patient in collaboration with other health team members.
6.
Identify professional practice issues related to the care of the pediatric
patient.
Course Requirements
1.
Patience, compassion, and a sense of humor.
2. Attendance is very
important. For the on-line student this means; the student must check the
bulletin board and their e-mail regularly for all class announcements and
updated information. The student must log in within the first week of class
and send an e-mail with the required information (see top of syllabus).Students
are expected to schedule their own computer and study time.
3.
All tests must be taken in the CentralCampusTestingCenter
(located in the library) by the assigned date. Please see the course calendar
and note the times that the tests will be available. You must bring your
B.C.C. picture ID. Failure to take the test by the assigned date may result
in receiving a score of "0" for that particular test.
4. Students
must have the necessary computer skills. The instructor will help with
course content, not with the learning of these skills or any computer problems.
The student is expected to:
-Login to the course web site the first week of class
-Remain in contact with the instructor by e-mail
-Check the course web bulletin board and e-mail at least twice a week.
-Be aware of all course announcements and test dates
-Complete assigned study guide exercises and self tests
-Use appropriate communication tools (course web site e-mail & bulletin
board)
-Observe rules of "Netiquette"
-Find alternate ways to get to a computer in the event that the student's
computer goes down. "Computer broken" or "Can't login to ISP" are not acceptable
excuses
5. Students
are responsible for the viewing of all required audiovisual materials and
advised to use any needed materials in the nursing lab or the learning
resource center. A list of available resources can be found in both the
nursing lab and the learning resource center.
6. The student
is responsible for all objectives and all material listed on the syllabus.
7. The
student is responsible for meeting all prerequisites and co requisites
as stated in the nursing process module. Students who do not meet these
requirements may not continue in this course and must schedule a meeting
with their department head immediately.
8.

for taking an online course and for important information for AOL users.
Evaluation Process
Theory grades will be determined
on a point basis. There are a possible 300 points in this course. These
points are based on three exams, each worth 100 points. Final letter grades
will be assigned based on the following division:
A=
276-300 points
B=
249-275 points
C=
219-248 points
D=
189-218 points
F=
below 189 points
The three exams will be based on
module objectives, required readings, and internet resources. Test questions
may be multiple choice and/or short answer. There will be NO exam
re-takes.
Exam #1 will contain 60% comprehension
type questions and 40% analysis type questions.
Exam #2 will contain 40% comprehension
type questions and 60% analysis type questions
Exam #3 will contain 25% comprehension
type questions and 75% analysis type questions.
Exam Schedule
All exams are to be taken in the
Central Campus Learning Resource Center (located in the library). The Learning
Resource Center is open 7 days/week. Please contact The Learning Resource
Center re: hours at 954 201-6660. You must bring your BCC picture ID.

Academic Dishonesty
Broward Community College's policy
5.02, Student Code of Conduct states that, "Dishonesty includes but is
not limited to cheating, plagiarism, and other forms of dishonesty." Cheating
and plagiarism are defined in this policy.
The Grades and Grade Appeal Process
states that, "Any grade received for academic dishonesty will be appealed
through the Academic Standards Subcommittee on Discipline and is not subject
to the grade appeal process. The subcommittee hears cases where the student
feels he/she has been unfairly charged with academic dishonesty. Additionally,
the student may be referred to the chief student affairs officer of the
campus/center for violations.

How to Access the Course once
you are Enrolled in this Course
The first login date will be Monday,
March 10, 2003. The student is expected to login to the course
during the first week of class (March 10-14, 2003), please refer back to
course requirements. The only people who will be permitted to login are
those students who have registered for your course.
Students who already have a WebCT
ID, should go to the WebCT login page at http://broward.eduprise.comThey
should login with their user name and password. Once their MyWebCT course
list is displayed, they should click on "add a course", and then locate
your course on the course list. They should then click on your course,
and, when the password box comes up, they should enter the user name and
password you have given them. If all goes well, they will be able to return
to their MyWebCT listing and see the course that they just added.
Students who have not yet created
a WebCT ID will need to go to the WebCT course list at http://broward.eduprise.com
They will need to locate your course, click on your course name, and, when
the password box comes up, they will need to enter the user name and password
that you assigned to them. When the next screen appears, they should select
"Create My WebCT" (do not select login). They then follow the prompts to
create their MyWebCT login. If they carefully follow the prompts, they
should end up at a "MyWebCT" screen that shows your course.
Students encountering login difficulties
should submit a "Problem
Report Form" on or after the start date for the semester.
All online students are to email
me stating that you have read, understand, and agree to abide by the above
course requirements for NUR 1310.
