Fall: 2012------ Term: 20131

Successful completion of this course requires that the student achieve a passing grade of 90% or above on the exam.  If the student does not achieve 90% or above on the first exam or does not take the first exam, then the student must take the second exam and achieve 90%.  Exams are given in pencil and paper format.  No calculators or other electronics are permissible.  The rounding rules are supplied and need not be memorized at this time.

Scheduled exam time for this course are:
Exam 1:  September 14 , 1300-1500, Building 41, North Campus, Room TBA
Exam 2:  September 21 ,1300-1500,  Building 41, North Campus, Room TBA

Faculty Introduction

My name is Gregg E. Brickman.  I'm a Registered Nurse and hold a Master's Degree in Nursing.  Medication calculations are an every day part of nursing practice, and each nurse must be skilled in this area.  I taught this course in a face-to-face format for thirteen years.

Course Description

MTB 1370 is a corequisite with NUR1020 and must be successfully completed to progress to subsequent nursing courses.  This course provides an intensive review of the mathematical operations necessary to accurately calculate medication dosages; including fractions, decimals, ratios and proportions.  Units and measures in apothecary, metric, and household systems are addressed with a major emphasis on application of drug dosage calculations for medication administration of enteral and parenteral routes

Methods of Instruction

This is a 1-credit hour course. Normally, the course meets for four hours a week for the first three weeks of a face-to-face class, followed by two, two hour sessions for testing. In this class, we will meet for the two, two hour testing sessions only.  The course must be completed, including the testing component, during the allotted five weeks.  The six online instructional units and 60 question 'workbook A' must be completed within the three week time frame. Each unit requires approximately 2-3 hours to complete for most students.  Additional practice is required to achieve mastery.  The required text provides additional explanation and practice.  Practice problems are provided within this BCOnline course as well.

Learning Outcomes

Upon the successful completion of this course, the student will be prepared to accurately calculate medication dosages utilizing fractions and decimals utilizing the ratios and proportions approach.  The student will also recognize and utilize units and measures in the apothecaries’, metric, and household systems with a major emphasis upon application for the calculation of both oral and parenteral drug dosages.

  1. The students shall be able to perform the basic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) with fractions, mixed numerals, and decimals.

  2. The students shall be able to solve problems utilizing a ratio proportion approach.

  3. The students shall be able to calculate oral dosages of medications by the use of the ratio proportion method.

  4. The students shall accurately calculate medication dosages adjusted for the weight of the patient.

  5. The students shall be able to calculate parenteral drug dosages and intravenous infusion flow rates.
