Course Description:Laboratory experiments and field trips to accompany BOT2010. Dissection exercises included. One two hour period weekly. Meets Area 4C general education requirements for the A.A. degree. Meets Areas 4 or 5 general education requirements for the A.S. degree.

1. and be able to recognize the external parts of angiosperm stems and leaves.
2. and be able to make and use both artificial and natural plant identification keys.
3. and be able to operate both monocular and dissecting microscopes.
4. of the development, morphology and anatomy of angiosperm and gymnosperm plant stems.
5. and the development, morphology and anatomy of angiosperm and gymnosperm plant leaves.
6. the physiological processes concerned with the digestive and respiratory processes occurring in plant tissues.
8. the development, morphology and anatomy of plant root systems.
9. the development, morphology and anatomy of angiosperm flowers.
11. the development, morphology and anatomy of angiosperm fruits.
12. and become proficient in the various asexual methods employed in plant propagation.
13. the relationship of plants to their environment.

14. and be able to recognize algae, fungi, bryophytes and prototraceophytes.

Co-requisite BOT 2010 - Botany
Texts Required Introductory Plant Biology Lab Manual - 10 or 11th edition by Stern [McGraw]
A Photographic Atlas for the Botany Laboratory, 5 edition [Morton]
Supplies Required Closed toed shoes and cloth lab coat MUST be worn in lab at all times.
Microscope glass slides, colored pencils, safety goggles.
Academic calendar datebook.

Course Requirements: Each student is responsible for
1. Being PREPARED. Do assigned readings BEFORE lab link to schedule M T.
2.
Respectful, mature and responsible behavior. Turning off cell phones. Following directions!
3. Attending and participating in ALL labs. Punctuality is required.
4. Planning ahead, critical thinking and problem solving skills.
5. Checking BC student email every day on campus.Obtain student email ID. Go to http://www.broward.edu. Select "Student email". Follow the instructions.
6. Working well in your assigned team throughout the term. Completing tasks together will help you do better.
7. All lab information. If you miss a lab contact another student before the next lab.

Quiz Policies
1. Quizzes will be based on lab exercises, review questions, lab preparation, assigned readings.
2. Will include information from the previous lab + the lab to be done that day.
3. Each quiz may include multiple choice, true/false, matching, identification questions, labeling structures.
4. An understanding of specific factual information and concepts presented will be required.
Quiz 
Student responsibility a. a picture identification. 
b. select best answer for each question.
c. 11 quizzes.
Late arrival cannot take quiz if a quiz has been handed in.
Make-up quizzes not available. ONLY the quiz of the day can be taken. 
Graded quizzes will be returned weekly.
Appointment can be made to review any quiz question withhin 2 weeks of the date the points were earned.
Cheating  a. student will automatically FAIL course. 
b. see BC policy in current college catalog.

Lab Procedures:
1. Lab begins and ends on time.
2. A quiz will be given during the first ten minutes of lab.
3.
After the quiz there will be a brief overview of the experiments assigned for that day.
4. Students will then complete their lab exercises. Supplies will be at your station or around the room.
5. Skill checks: TBA, 2 try limit.
6. At end of lab: properly clean equipment and work areas [wipe counter, straighten supply tray, trash disposal, return equipment;
microscope: 4x objective in correct position, cord around ocular lens, covered].
7. You must be checked out before you can leave the lab.

Safety Precautions: To protect yourself
1.
wear cloth lab coat, closed toed shoes & safety goggles.
2. no drinking or eating in lab.
3. follow prescribed lab protocols.
4. do not use any chipped/cracked glassware, or clogged bottles.
5. alert instructor if you are injured during the lab.

Grading
Final grade based on total number of points earned  Includes
10 quizzes [10 highest] 10 x 5     =  50

Germination project 20 x 1     =  20
Wildflower/native plant project 10 x 1     =  10

How To Be Successful In This Course: You will find it helpful to
1. Realize that BOT 2010L requires a minimum of FOUR hours per week in reading and studying.
2. Read/use the tips in
"Essentials of Science Success."
3. Be PREPARED. Before lab: do assigned readings.
4.
Seek the help of the biology tutor/instructor, link to tutor schedule.

Projects:
1. Germination - germinate wildflower seeds, produce wildflower seedlings, plant, maintain successfully until term end.
2. Wildflower or native plant [whichever you plant] - produce a report
a. 1 page color picture
b. 1 page containing scientific/common name, host plant [if applicable], plant type, flower description, bloom time [if applicable], soil type, maximum growth height, habitat, sunlight required, drought tolerance, annual/biennial/perennial

c. submit a hard copy and an electronic copy.
