Meningitis

Nursing Assessment

  • systematic neuro checks
  • Kernig's sign
  • Brudzinski's sign
  • vital signs
  • hydration

Nursing Interventions

  • decrease environmental stimuli
  • seizure precautions
  • respiratory isolation until causative organism is isolated and CSF sterile (usually after 48 hours of appropriate antibiotic treatment)
  • supportive care
    • control fever
      • use of hypothermia blanket
      • tepid baths
    • maintain hydration
    • monitor I & O
    • monitor electrolytes
    • pain relief
  • headache
    •  acetaminophen given
    • ice packs
    • cool cloth to cover the eyes
