Instructional Events as Learning Objects

Why use learning objects?

There are many good reasons to use learning objects in your online course.

  1. When a learning object is created, it can be re-used again-not only in your course, but it also can be shared with other instructors outside of your discipline. If the learning object is designed around a learning outcome, the learning object becomes "discipline neutral". Can you think of learning outcomes that might be taught in a variety of courses?
  2. Learning objects really fit the way learners like to see content online. Learning objects are not written like a textbook-the content is chunked and very specific to the task at hand.
  3. Learning objects maximize instructional effectiveness. Since they are wrapped around an instructional event, they become self-contained learning modules. Learners can work through each learning object and master knowledge before moving on to the next learning object.
  4. Learning objects provide instructors with options. You can move them around in your course. You can use them as required content or make them supplemental. They can also be updated quickly without recreating the entire content.
  5. They are easy to make!
