RATIONALE:
Design has been defined as the organization of the materials and the elements
of art in such a way as to fulfill a specific purpose. The knowledge of recombining
these elements of art into a design will provide the student with the basic
understanding of the visual arts and composition. From this base, the student
may direct her/his knowledge and natural inclinations toward a career in any
aspect of visual arts, or graphic design technologies.
The students will be able to perceive and analyze the elements of design existing
in the works of art, urban development, everyday living, and in the first designer
of all - Nature herself.
GOALS:
This course will introduce you to the basic elements of design. It is constructed
to give you sufficient background in the aesthetics and basic knowledge, so
that you may continue at your level of commitment or transfer to another institution
for further development.
You will become familiar with the elements of design and will develop an appreciation
and understanding of different art forms, design in everyday environment (graphic,
architectural, interior design, etc.) and the natural environment.
During this course you will deal with the following categories: the basic elements
of art and design:
LINE, SHAPE (FORM), VALUE, TEXTURE, COLOR; SPACE, COLOR THEORY, COMPOSITION,
EXPLORATION OF DIFFERENT MATERIALS AND TECHNIQUES, PURPOSE IN DESIGN, and EXPLORATION
OF YOUR OWN CREATIVITY.
RESOURCES:
Various slides or videos on the creative process and numerous examples of working
with different media and materials.
Slides or video that describes various contemporary approaches to design and
visual art exhibitions at The Art Gallery on campus or local museums.
Also, handouts that will accompany assignments, college library, students in
your class and your professor.
FORMAT:
This course is one in which the student progresses at his/her own rate through
various assignments. The professor will be responsible for explaining the different
assignments to the students and demonstrating different techniques of approaches
as the course progresses. At various times, the instructor will conduce critiques
of work and the students are expected to take part in this process.
PROFESSORS ROLE:
The student is given freedom to develop her/his abilities along determined lines
of growth. It is the responsibility of the professor to correctly manage that
direction based the students understanding of the aesthetics and the creative
process of design. The assignments will be carefully planned to support individual
students and class growth.
EVALUATION:
Several partial grades will be given during the term and the final grade will
be based on the following:
Improvement from entering skills.
Record of attendance (the student is allowed to be absent three class times,
after which either the grade may be lowered, or the student may be withdrawn
by the professor).
Completion of assignments (dates for completion of each project will be announces
and no late work will be accepted).
Taking part in classroom activities and critiques.
Complete Portfolio grade at the end of the term. (50% of the grade)
Record of carrying out studio maintenance responsibility
Cooperation (the student that will repeatedly disrupt the class, will be withdrawn
from the class by the professor).

each one will be explained in class by the professor;
3 sketches must be done in the sketchbook for each project.
Line: The student will work with lines: rhythmic, repetitive, geometric, and
biomorphic; even broken, continuous. Purpose: to learn to control linear design
and use the line as a part of design.
Texture: The student will organize textures (visual or actual) into collages,
and create textures using pen and ink. Purpose: experimenting and learning about
properties of textures by organizing them into a workable composition.
Shape/Form: The student will work with abstract, semi-abstract, and stylized
shapes, which he/she will organize into compositions of balance, tension, and
rhythm. Purpose: to learn to organize different shapes into a design.
Space: Positive and negative. The student will work on one project in which
the positive space is dominant, and another in which the reverse is the case.
Purpose: the student will become aware of both the positive and the negative
spaces and will be able to use this knowledge to his/her advantage in their
future design and artwork.
Color: The student will learn color theory, painting technique, and will be
able to organize the colors to achieve several desired effects, including color
wheel, cool color, warm color, value, optical effects and creating mood with
color. Purpose: to familiarize the student with color theory, the system of
values, and to study the effect of color on the human eye and the human psyche.
Decorative design: The student will recombine several elements of design in
order to create a balanced pattern, using mixed media technique.
Purpose: to improve the students skill in working with mixed media, and
to develop students creativity.
Imaginary Environment: the student, using her/his imagination, will create imaginary
interior or exterior environment or world, using acrylic paints or mixed media.
Purpose: to challenge the student to further develop his/her own style and imagination.
