All Computer Science and Engineering Students will need to keep their schedule and BCC school ID with them at all times to identify themselves as required in computer labs and classes.

Course Objectives/Description:

To familiarize students with the fundamental concepts and capabilities of computers. Students will become familiar with computer concepts and its hardware components. They will be introduced to operating systems and operating environments. They will gain a basic understanding and use of microcomputer applications such as word processing and electronic spreadsheet, running under Windows XP.

Labs/Assignments and Exams:

There will be four to six labs/assignments and four exams for the course. They will be given as scheduled in the course schedule section of this syllabus.
Labs: Due dates for all labs will be given when they are handed-out. Labs should be completed using software covered in the course during the scheduled lab time plus your own time, if necessary. All lab-assignments are due no later than the start time of the next class meeting; otherwise, it is considered late. Late lab-assignments will not be graded. Your grade for that lab will be zero (0). If your absence is excused, obtain a makeup Lab due date from the instructor.
You will be required to turn in your work diskette/Flash drive during this course.

Exams: Out of the four exams, the best three exam scores (best three out of four) will be used in the final grade calculation. Any missed exam will result in a zero (0).

All due dates must be met for all labs and exams unless expressly prearranged with instructor as soon as possible. There will be no makeup exam and no makeup Lab, except for the excused absences, as explained under Attendance. Only one makeup Lab or one makeup exam will be permitted. There is no makeup for missing a makeup!

Attendance:

Attendance and participation in class and lab are an important aspect of this course. Therefore, attendance is required. Open discussion in class is welcomed and encouraged. If you find that you cannot complete the course or are not earning the grade you want, be sure to withdraw officially by the final withdrawal date, which is shown at the beginning of the course schedule.

You will be given an excused absence, if you miss a class for one of these valid reasons. Valid reasons are: (a.) a religious holiday, (b.) your own serious illness, (c.) death in the immediate family, or (d.) attendance to statutory governmental responsibilities (i.e. jury duty, court appearance, military obligation, etc.). You may be required to provide documentation for this type of absence.

However, it is your responsibility to find out about and be knowledgeable of assignments given, materials covered, or announcements made in class during your absence, regardless of whether your absence is excused or not.

A grade of “F” may be given to any student who has accumulated excessive absences (four or more class meetings) and has not officially withdrawn from the class. It is your responsibility to notify the registration office if at any point you decide to withdraw from this course. The instructor does not assign Withdrawal (W) or Incomplete (I) grades except under extreme circumstances, and at the discretion of the instructor.

Grading Policy:

The student will be evaluated according to the following weighting factors (WF can be thought of as % of Final Grade):

Lab Assignments                                  30%

Best three of four exams (20% each)     60%

Attendance & Participation                    10%

                                                          -----------------

                                  Total                              100%

It will be difficult to pass this course if you skip all exams, all Labs, or all class-meetings in its entirety.

The following standard grading scale will be used to determine your final letter grade:

       A   90 to 100%

       B    80 to  89%

       C   70 to   79%

       D   60 to   69%

       F     0 to   59%

Final numerical grade will be rounded to the nearest percentage point and converted to a letter grade.

Example of final grade determination: Suppose your scores are as shown in the Score column.

                                                   WF               Score               WF x Score

Labs, average of all                       30%             80                    .30 x  80 = 24.00

Exam #1                                       20%             90                    .20 x  90 = 18.00

Exam #2                                       20%             70                    .20 x  70 = 14.00

Exam #3                                       20%             70                    .20 x  70 = 14.00

Attendance                                   10%             100                  .10 x 100 = 10.00

                        Add the last column:  24 + 18 + 14 + 14 + 10  = 80 = B

                                                            ****************

Academic Honesty:

According to the BCC Regulations, "Broward Community College expects its students to be honest in all of their course work and activities. ... A student's academic work must be the result of his or her own thought, research, or self-expression."

According to these Regulations, cheating includes, but is not limited to, the giving of work or information to another student to be copied and/or used as his or her own. "Academic penalties may include, but are not limited to, a failing grade for a particular assignment or a failing grade for a particular course." (See Academic Information in the BCC current year Catalog.)

Please remember and observe these.

  1. Class starts on time. You should come to class on time. Students that are late disrupt the class. Three late arrivals/early departures are equivalent to one unexcused absence.
  2. If a class must be missed, call the instructor to find out the materials that will be missed. All due dates must be met for all exams and labs/assignments unless expressly prearranged with instructor. The missed exam or lab will result in a zero (0).
  3. Late Lab penalty is minus 40%. Late Labs will not be graded if handed in two consecutive class meetings from the due date.
  4. Consultation: The instructor may be reached at the above phone numbers or e-mail. The student will be called back or replied to as soon as possible.
  5. Each of your Lab project pages must contain your name and section typewritten in font size 12 in order for your paper to be graded. The pages should be stapled together in the order presented in the project.
  6. Working together: Students are allowed to work together and to discuss the material assigned. However, it is also expected that each student does his/her own work. If it appears that two or more students have submitted the same material for labs or exams, each student involved will receive an F for that piece of work. Repeated violation is a cause for an F in the final grade of the course.
That means, Two violations = F.
  7. Kindly refrain from inappropriate behavior during the class.
  8. Instructor reserves the right to make grade adjustment, either positive or negative, to your final grade if it becomes necessary.
    Examples:
Positive adjustments= +5% to +10% for consistently good quality work and ethics. You could get 110% instead of 100% in this course!
Negative adjustments= -5% to -10% for non-complying of course requirements, destroying lab equipment(s), disruptive behavior, not following instructional directive and so forth.
  9. Read the appropriate chapters or sections ahead of scheduled class discussion.
