HELPFUL LINKS FOR THE LECTURE:
While your textbook and the handouts I will be giving you in class should be your primary resource for images and additional material, you may find these sites of value in this rapidly changing subject:
These
sites contain images and animations of some of the organisms we will be discussing
in the class:
Cells Alive!
Dennis
Kunkel's Image Gallery (there is also a virtual
electron microscope on this site for you to run)
The
World-Wide Web Virtual Library: Microscopy
This excellent site contain images and animations of immune cells and mechanisms: Cells Alive!
This site describes various diseases transmitted by food: FDA Site on Foodborne Diseases
Some news sites have good, current health information such as CBS news or locally, the Sun-Sentinal
These
online journals have articles and images for medical microbiology and immunology.
They also have case studies. In addition, they illustrate the constantly-changing
nature of microbiology:
Medscape
New England Journal of
Medicine Online - Home Page
MICROBES ON TV :
On Fox TV the show "House" is a medical show that actually involves people thinking and figuring things out from a number of possibilities - it deals with a lot of diseases and other knowledge we touch on in our course (plus it has some really quirky characters). Give it a look. The Discovery Channel also has some good programs on medical topics from time to time as does PBS.
Animal Planet has a new show about various parasitic diseases called "Monsters Inside Me" a link to the show's page is here
For fun try their "Adopt a Parasite / Parasite Pet Shop" game here
