Fully Online Course Organization Using Learning Modules and SoftChalk
Dr. Pedro Oliveira

In developing his Introduction to Ethics course, Dr. Pedro Oliveira was looking for a professional, yet easy way to present his chapter overviews to his students. With the help of E-learning Associate Mirella Baker-Bimmel, he created them using a software product called SoftChalk. And taking advantage of the Learning Module concept in the new Blackboard Course Management Systenm, he developed a course that was easily navigated by students.

His Course Home Page is organized around the chapters he teaches. Gone from the Course Home Page are the traditional tools that were found in WebCT 4 such as the Assignment Dropbox, Email, Discussion and other course tools necessary in an online course. These tools are now found in the Course Tools menu to the left of the Course Home Page.

Students access Dr. Oliveira's lessons by clicking on the appropriate Module. Within each module students have access to chapter overviews, lecture notes, powerpoints, discussion questions, assignments and assessments. These modules are organized using the Learning Module tool in Blackboard.

For example, the Chapter 1 Module (below) opens up as a Learning Module containing a Chapter Overview, a Powerpoint, 3 assignments, 2 Extra Point Assignments and some Weblinks. The Chapter Overview is done using SoftChalk and built into the Learning Module for Chapter 1.

Each of his chapter overviews contain an overview, the learning outcomes that the students will complete, a list of the learning materials and activities (including discussions, assignments, and assessments) and weblinks that are important to the chapter. Dr. Oliveira wanted to create a consistent approach to each learning module so his students would have an expectation of what they would be doing and learning each time they opened it (learning module).
