Effective
Use of Publisher Content - MyMathLab - MAT 1033
Professor Mariana Coanda
Even
though publisher content is a great way to supplement online courses,
it can be quite a challenge to figure out how to use it in a way
that is easy to upload for the instructor and makes the most sense
for the learner. Professor Mariana Coanda found this to be true
when she began to design MAT 1033 using publisher content from Pearson
Education called MyMathLab. She discovered that a major problem
in using MyMathLab is that it forced learners to go to a separate
website outside of Blackboard. Learners would get confused by being
in two different learning courseshells at the same time.
Not
wanting to give up the excellent tutorials and videos that MyMathLab
provides, Professor Coanda worked with Pearson Education to get
them to design the content from MyMathLab to open up in Blackboard
rather than having the students login to MyMathLab.
To
make the course work with publisher content, she set up the Course
Homepage with MyMathLab content located in "Chapter Contents".

Within
the Chapter Contents, learners progress through each chapter as
required by the syllabus. The learners are now accessing MyMathLab
without leaving Blackboard.

Each
chapter is organized in a similar way-an explanation of basic concepts,
some multimedia (Flash), Homework and Practice Quizzes.

The
Basic Concepts include a video
presentation on problem solving and an interactive
set of PDF's (multimedia textbook section) that allows the learner
work out problems, hear audios and see additional videos. This section
also contains exercise sets for the learners to work on.

The
type of content that is provided by MyMathLab is rich with different
media elements that appeals to all types of learning styles. Working
with Pearson Education, Professor Coanda was able to capture the
great videos and animations they provided and the robust course
management system that Blackboard provides.
