Give Students Opportunities to Achieve Better Grades and Succeed
Professor Charlene Koonin
I teach developmental reading classes, and all of my assessments are online. I use a unique way to give my students more opportunities to achieve better grades and succeed. If my students are unhappy with their grades after they have completed and submitted an assessment, they can use Blackboard email to contact me and request a re-do before the due date. This gives my students the incentive to prepare for the assessments early, complete and submit their assessments early, actually review their assessment results, learn from their mistakes, and get another opportunity to achieve a better grade. This format would be extremely difficult to accomplish in a traditional 'paper/pen' assignment or assessment.
Here is what I do:
After a student has emailed me for a re-do, I go to Assessments tool, open the particular assessment, and then View Submissions. On the following Assessment Manager window. I pull down the ActionLinks to the right of the student's name, and click Reset Entire Submission. This will reset the student's 1st attempt and allow the student to re-take the assessment within the availability time window.

One-Minute Summaries
Another great technique I use to make sure students understand my lessons is similar to Vince Tinto's "one-minute test", except that my One-Minute Summary is done online. After each class, in the Discussions Board, I have my students write one or two sentences summarizing the most important aspect they attained from my lesson. I can instantly determine if my students understood my explanations. in addition, it is also extremely helpful for students to read each others summaries.
Following are two examples of students' one-minute summaries posted in the Discussion Board. Students are asked to explain and give a definition of Vocabulary, Topics, and Main Ideas.
