Creative Ways to Use Discussions Tool

Dr. Barbara Nightingale, Professor of English, creatively uses the Discussions tool in Blackboard to make students feel connected, interact with their peers,, keep them on track, and also ensure that students read course materials. Below are examples of how Dr Nightingale uses the Dicsussions tool.

The screeshot below shows how Dr Nightingale uses the Discussions tool to post class instructions; rather like a lecture, the student can come here to review how to do various things throughout the course.

Below is how Dr Nightingale uses the Discussions tool as a blog for each author that the student reads.  Students post discussions back and forth with one another and have a “class” discussion on each author.  Comments often get quite lively!

This screenshot captures an example of how Dr Nightingale uses Discussions for students to comment on what they have learned throughout the course via the introductions to each chapter, as well as their own choice of a reading that was not assign.  She also solicits their personal comments or reactions to the entire course, and use their suggestions for revising future courses.  In addition, here is where Dr Nightingale posts HER comments on reading selections.  She waits until discussions have finished before posting her own take on a story.

Web-based Student Presentations

In her Honors ENC 1102 course (Introduction to Literature), Dr. Barbara Nightingale requires her students to work in teams in order to create a web-based presentation exploring notable authors. Dr. Nightingale uses the Presentation Tool to create this alternative assessment strategy.

One of her course assignments is to have the students work with a partner in order to create a website that explores authors. Following her guidelines, the students use Netscape Composer to create the website. The assignment is found on the Course Homepage and incorporated into a content module:

Once students have completed the project, students upload the website using the Presentation Tool. Dr. Nightingale has created the team list and students can upload their presentations by following the directions within the Presentation Tool. The group presentation can be viewed by clicking on the title of the project found in the Description column.
