SYG 2000 General Sociology - Fully Online
Professor Mirella Baker-Bemmel
Professor Baker Bemmel has taught Principles of Sociology in Web Enhanced and Fully Online format. Students enrolled in the Web Enhanced course meet face to face regularly, but they have their syllabus, study materials and grades available to them via Blackboard. Her fully online students only visit the campus to take proctored exams. The remainder of the course takes place in an online setting. As they progress through the course and meet certain conditions (example: successful completion of assignments and exams), students will gain access to sequential learning modules available from the homepage.

The first module students must complete is the Orientation Module. After an initial introduction to the professor, students are introduced to the set up of the course along with basic navigation techniques. Professor Baker Bemmel believes that consistency in course design enhances her students’ success tremendously.

Each learning module contains chapter summaries, narrated power point slides, chapter mini quizzes and discussions. Students can easily navigate through content created in “Softchalk”, a webpage authoring software, which allows an opportunity to print if one desires hard copies.

There are weekly mini quizzes taken at home, which test the students’ understanding of each chapter. These quizzes prepare the students for their high stake on-campus proctored exams.

Students participate in a variety of discussions which compliment the chat and email feature in the course. Some discussions are text based; others are based on short videos. Professor Baker Bemmel ties in different elements of learning in order to cater to the different learning styles of her students.

Lastly, students are kept informed through emails and announcements. Although a thorough syllabus is provided at the beginning of each semester, weekly reminders help to keep students on track.
