EPI 0030 Diversity in the Classroom - Fully Online
Professor Dominique Charlotteaux

Dr. Dominique Charlotteaux has developed EPI 0030 – Diversity in the Classroom (2 credits) as a fully online course. The course also entails a 1-credit fieldwork component (EPI 0945) with a blended component. The course is part of a series of 7 courses offered by BC’s Educator Preparation Institute to prepare individuals with a Bachelors degree outside of the field of education to pass the Florida Teacher Certification Examinations (FTCE), and enter the teaching profession in the State of Florida.

The course has been BC internally QM certified and also nationally QM recognized.

The homepage of the course includes professional-looking buttons and a banner that capture the essence of the course about diversity, as well as an explanation about the 2 components of the course (i.e., the academic and fieldwork components) and six folders, namely the Start Here, ADA Access, Modules, Fieldwork, Blackboard Help, and Broward College Resources folders. The homepage is illustrated below.

The Start Here folder includes a Welcome and Course Overview video by the instructor with a transcript of her words to address the needs of students who are hearing- or visually impaired, as well as a visual map and explanation of how to navigate the course, videocast of the weekly schedule, Syllabus, Blackboard Orientation, and Blackboard orientation assessments. The screen capture below is from the instructor’s introductory video and transcript.

The ADA Access folder on the homepage includes information on how to contact the BC Office of Disability Services, as well as on the different media used in the course.

The Modules folder includes a group project sign-up sheet, and 8 learning modules with weekly course schedules, lecture notes, supplemental resources, and weekly assessments. The learning modules were created using Softchalk.

Each learning module is written using the same organizational structure and pedagogy based on learning-centered strategies, including a variety of instructional media (i.e., text, audio, and video) and instructional methods (i.e., lecture notes, interactive class discussions, cooperative learning, and online quizzes). Each learning module also features a videocast of the weekly course activities which is featured below.

The homepage also includes a Fieldwork folder with the fieldwork requirements for the course, as well as a fieldwork orientation, classroom observation reports, directions for the fieldwork report, and a lesson plan template.

The Bb (Blackboard) Help folder provides access to 24/7 Blackboard Help.

The BC (Broward College) Resources folder gives students access to various support resources, such as library services, software resources, and tutoring services.
The course uses grading rubrics to evaluate the quality of student work. An example is featured below.
